Where exactly is the cam seal located on a GSR redface ..and is it easy to replace? What parts do I have to remove to get to it? Thx.

You know where the VTEC solenoid is? It's RIGHT to the right of it.

It's what keeps oil in the head from leaking down from the hole where the exhaust cam is.

It's a pain to remove. (I just put a STR cam seal in this last weekend because I was leaking oil all down the head & block because my rubber one was worn out).

    You have to take off:

    1) valve cover
    2) 10 12mm bolts that hold the oil spray rail and cam bearing caps down
    3) 4 10mm bolts on the end bearing caps
    4) the oil spray rail
    5) the end bearing cap closest to the VTEC solenoid

Then you can remove the cam seal. Put the new one in.. (lubricate it with some oil first so it seats nicely).

I believe the 12mm bolts need to be torqued to 23ft-lb. The 10mm bolts (the ones on the far ends) need to be torqued to 6ft-lb if I remember correctly. There is a special sequence to torquing them down. I don't think the order matters... just work from the center out.

After I installed the cam seal.. I've gotten zero oil leaks... even after driving hard.

    smile

    Dustin

I put in the STR cam seal too. I bought the silver one, can't hardly see it anyways. My sorry stock one started leaking at about 70,000 miles. The STR design is supposed to last the life of the car.

does the JRSC in the way of the process? The JRSC seems to be in the way of EVERYTHING so far..pcv valve, clutch etc..
I might replace the cam seal when I do my valve adjustment. Approx. how long would it take to remove and replace that seal? Mine started leaking frown

blownaway, it is leaking...I'm trying to find a place to order it. How much is it anyways (STR cam seal).

Dustin mentioned that you have to remove lots of stuffs to get to it. A couple of other guys said all you have to do is pop the valve cover open, remove two bolts that holds the cam seal retainer then pop it out. Now the latter instruction is something I can do biggrin ... Anyways, which instruction is for the ones near the distributor? I really don't want to open the damn engine up then find out I can't get to it redface (my biggest fear). BTW, there are two types of cam seals...two on the timing belt side and the other is next to the distributor (the one I'm looking forward to replace). Perhaps Dustin is talking about the ones next to the timing belt?

The cam seal is just past the #4 cylinder, behind the distributor. Its about 1-1/4 diameter. Its right above where all that oil is leaking out and headed for the clutch....

So why are you changing it if it's not leaking yet?
